² If Abraham was justified^[a] by works,^(A) he has something to boast about—but not before God. ³ For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.^{[b](B) 4} Now to the one who works,^(C) pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed.
